Pony Racing Training day
In October four OS&B riders went to Bilsington in
Kent to take part in a training day, to be assessed and shown
part of what they need to know in order for them to take part in
pony racing at Point to Point meetings and other venues.
Jack Siggs, Harry and Georgia Keenlyside and Lucy Martin all
took their ponies for the day which started at 9am sharp with an
introduction to trainers, followed by a lesson on the mechanical
horse to help with style and balance whilst riding in short
stirrups. This was harder than the children expected!
Next their own ponies were tacked up and they were off into the
indoor school for riding instruction, with short stirrups again!
Later, they took part in various balance games to show their
strengths and weaknesses, and after lunch were back on the
ponies and out on the gallops, where they were paired and rode
approximately 4/5 furlongs. It was very exciting, there were a
few fallers (no OS&B I am pleased to say), all the ponies
behaved really well, some faster than others but a lot of fun,
the photos probably tell a better story.
