Mini Eventing Reports

Ashford Valley ODE 3 September, Chilham

Ashford Valley’s ODE at Chilham was on the 3rd September and OSB had a team at level 3 with George Mathews on Rebel, Harriet Gillam on Rob and Sophie Aldrich on Toffee Vodka. Harriet had best dressage and finished 1st individually and Sophie and George just missed out on the placings. It was a challenging show jumping and cross country course; a number of people were eliminated and the hills were very steep cross country! All the team did great rounds and it was great that they all finished without any time penalties.  The team achieved 4th overall. At Level 2 Harriet and Morgan were competing individually and both had great results. Morgan came 1st and Harriet on Asher came 4th Report by Sophie Aldrich

7 members represented OS&B at Ashford Valley's ODE in the beautiful surroundings of Chilham Castle on Saturday 3rd September in lovely sunshine.

In the mini class (level 1) Morgann Bloquet with Blackie got the best dressage score and won their arena despite having a fence down in the show jumping. Harriet Gillam and Asher came 6th in their arena despite two SJ fences down and Elizabeth Matthews and Fizz came 6th in their arena with a double clear. The cross country course was full up and very long so all three girls did really well to go clear.

In the Novice section (level 2), Harriet Gillam and Rob won their arena, George Matthews and Young Rebel had a fantastic clear cross country round but unfortunately Rebel was not in the mood for dressage and Sophie Aldrich and Toffee Vodka had an unlucky run out cross country. Sadly Rebekka Barrow had to withdraw as Delta was lame but came along anyway and was a fantastic groom for everyone! Overall the team came 4th which was a great achievement as there were numerous eliminations sj and xc.

In the intermediate level we had just two competitors - Megan Cole and Boyd won Best Dressage but Boyd decided he wasn't in a show jumping mindset and Claudia Thornett and Jubilee Sandpiper had problems at the water complex on the cross country course.

This was a lovely well organised event with challenging cross country and show jumping courses and was well worth the trip. Report by Caroline Matthews

Romney Marsh ODE 17 August, Delmonden

On the 16th August Harriet Gillam, Sophie Aldrich and Morgan Bloquet competed in the Romney Marsh ODE at Delmonden Farm. It was a successful day for everyone with Morgan achieving a fantastic best dressage of 13.1 and finishing 3rd on Blackie at Level 2 and at Level 1 a double clear on Buzz finishing 2nd. For Level 3, Sophie on Toffee Vodka and Harriet on Rob both went clear show jumping and cross country with Harriet coming 1st and Sophie 3rd. Harriet had best dressage in her arena.

One Day Event hosted by Southdown Hunt East Pony Club

Wivelsden Farm, 10th July, 2011

There were two OS&B members at this event so unfortunately not enough to make up a team, however, Morgann Bloquet and Heidi Cousins could not have been more successful for OS&B.  In both classes the cross country was well over height!  In Class 1, Morgann rode her fantastic pony Kilmorie Carlos gaining first place in dressage and the class.

In Class 2 Morgann rode the wonderful Buzz Lightyear to overall victory.  They produced a super dressage (winning) test and clear show jumping and cross country.  Heidi riding the lovely Take Two came 3rd in her Dressage Arena and went onto gain a beautiful clear round in both show jumping and cross country.  Heidi and Take Two came 2nd place overall.  Therefore, a 1st and 2nd for OS&B in this class!  Great result – well done girls.  This was particularly pleasing for both Heidi and Morgann as it was Heidi and Take Two’s first ever One Day Event and Morgann was awarded best rider of the day!

Both girls would like to thank Mark Ruddock for helping them; particularly with their dressage.

Opportunities for younger members to enter a one day event came over two successive June weekends, for practically all the OS&B children these were the first ODEs they have entered.  Both events were very well run with OS&B scoring several individual and team successes, lots of clear rounds, and the children gaining lots of experience and having fun.  I think we would all recommend these events to younger members in future years.  For the Eridge event our youngest Os&B member was Rosie Moore who celebrated her 7th birthday on the day of the competition, at Romney Marsh our youngest competitor was Tia Holland who at 5 is already showing older children (and adults…) how to ride a dressage test!

Eridge Pony Club, Mini mini ODE, Sunday 12 June at Eridge Park.

In the 1’6’’  8 years and under class, riders did the Walk trot ‘D’ test, the showjumping was well up to height and included doubles and spreads, but the cross country was reasonably modest and only had a few jumps fully up to height though it had a good variety of jumps with a ditch, a step and several logs and brush jumps.  The XC was set out as a fenced off track within an area of woodland so was very contained.  The larger jumps mostly all had a ‘learner’ option fence. Pictures in the Photo Gallery (link at top of page)

Class 1:  8 yrs and under

Individuals:  Daniel Vickery and Cookie 3rd (Arena B), Jack Siggs and Bob 7th (B)

Teams:  Jack Siggs and Rosie Moore were teamed up with Duncan Morgan from East Sussex PC and came 4th, just beating Edward Daniell, Ollie Holman, Daniel Vickery and Lucy Martin into 5th out of 7 teams.

Class 2:  12 years and under

1’6’’ with the same SJ and XC as the under 8’s, but the Introductory Dressage test 2007, walk, trot, canter.

Individuals:  Emma Cording and Joe 2nd (C), Cora Moore and Fleur 2nd (D),

Ronni Harding-Good and Bella Boo 3rd (C), Sarah Gordon and Tommy 5th (D)

Teams:  Emma Cording, Cora Moore, Sophie Preston and Amelia Simpson came 4th, just pipping Rosie Underhill, Sarah Gordon and Ronni Harding-Good into 5th place team out of a total of 10 teams.

Class 4: 12 years and under 2’, Introductory dressage test 2007

Charlotte Vickery and Pip were our only contenders in this class and were lying 3rd in their arena after the dressage and rode clear SJ.  The XC for this class was a much more challenging ‘open’ course and by now the rain was really pelting down.  2 refusals cross country meant Charlotte finished the day in  a commendable10th place.

Romney Marsh PC Sunday 19 June Mini ODE at Barons Grange, Iden.

With 4 dressage arenas, a separate clear round SJ arena on an honesty pay as you go system, and a very well laid out XC course travelling through 3 separate fields this was a great event to build up experience and very well suited to younger people as lead reins were allowed (though none of us did), and the lowest height classes were more cross pole than fully up to their 1’3’’ height.  Lower classes were also split into assisted and unassisted sections. The XC was very well designed with jumps that either altered in height throughout the day, or adjacent options so that every height class had their own log pile/step /ditch etc.  It was possible to do Clear round XC once a class had finished offering excellent training experience where there were banks, a water jump and some sizeable tree trunks to try out over. The 4 classes also ran over slightly different courses meaning that riders had to keep their wits about them to follow their own numbered course – a challenge that unfortunately caught out a couple of our riders.

Class 1, Level 1 2’, 2007 introductory test

Emma and Charlotte were lying 5th and 6th respectively after the dressage,  Charlotte went clear XC but Emma had a couple of stops in the XC so that final placings were  Charlotte Vickery 5th, Emma Cording 11th out of 14 starters.

Class 3a, Level 1 beginners, 1’6’’ unassisted, walk trot test D

Daniel Vickery and Cookie were lying 6th after the dressage and jumped excellent clear SJ and XC but missed a fence XC so were eliminated.  Cora Moore and Fleur also jumped super clear SJ and XC rounds and finished 7th out of 14 starters.

Class 3b, Level 1 beginners assisted, 1’6’’, walk trot test D

Ronni Harding Good and Bella Boo just missed the top spot, coming second with a fraction of a point between her and the winner from the dressage phase and clears XC and SJ.  Jack Siggs and Bob placed 5th overall staying on their dressage score also with clears SJ and XC, with Edward Daniell who had lain 3rd after the dressage coming 8th overall after one refusal XC. 14 starters.

Class 4a, unassisted 1’3’’, walk trot test D

Rosie Moore did a commendable dressage test walk trot D and had a huge grin all the way around her clear SJ and XC rounds to come 3rd overall out of 9 starters.

Class 4b, assisted 1’3’’ walk trot test D

Tia Holland and Heaven Sent finished 3rd, on their dressage placing with a test full of 8s and even a 9, and 2 lovely clear rounds.  Amelia Simpson also rode 2 lovely clear rounds on Mary despite horrid sideways rain and finished on her dressage placing of 4th overall out of 8 starters.

Well done to everybody!

East Sussex Pony Club, Sunday 5th June

The club was represented by Morgann Bloquet at Level 1 on the infamous Buzz Lightyear. They achieved the best dressage score of the day in their arena, followed by an unlucky pole down in the show jumping followed by a lack of communication on the cross country course saw their lead slip but they still managed a very creditable 4th overall.

At Level 2 the club was represented by Nicole Patterson-Vangas, Melissa Cheeseman, Morgann Bloquet and Harriet Gillam. By the time they rode their dressage it was cold, windy and raining. However all put in good performances in slippery arenas (and not the flattest of the season) to be in contention as individuals and as a team. A special mention must go to Melissa on the fabulous Cappuccino who achieved the best dressage score of the day in their arena (75% or 25 penalties) Show jumping saw three of the four go clear with Blackie just rolling a pole. As the cross country wasn’t being timed the instruction was for the team to go steady, try telling the combinations of Philadelphia & Nicole and Asher & Harry! Cappuccino decided he was wet enough and questioned why he’d want to go through the water complex and one step back saw them incur 20 penalties. Nicole and Harry went clear although Harry was stopped on course due to a fallen rider a new experience for her and enough time for Asher to re-charge his batteries, not that they were flat! Morgann unfortunately had an issue out on course but managed to overcome it and arrived back safely.

The overall results were:

Melissa 5th, Nicole 4th and Harry 2nd.

The team came 1st!!!

A difficult day in the conditions but the whole team were a credit to themselves and the club. Very well done.

In the ‘aged over 13 category’ it was great to see Kelly back on board and winning.

Bisley ODE – Monday 2nd May 2011

As is the annual pilgrimage, the season started with the ODE at Bisley. A bumper number of entries saw the creation of a waiting list but thankfully all OS&B riders were lucky enough to secure a place. Those representing the club at mini level were:

  • Jade Griffin
  • Rebecca Woodhouse
  • Katie Rennie
  • Nicole Patterson-Vanegas
  • Natalie Arscott
  • Elizabeth Matthews
  • Harry Gillam

Highlights of the day included:

At level 1, Morgann secured a best dressage score on Buzzlight Year and finished 8th overall in her arena and a very creditable 6th on her other ride, Kilmorie Carlos.

At level 2, Nicole had a super day finishing on her dressage score and was placed 3rd overall in her arena, while Elizabeth Matthews went one better finishing in 2nd place.

Harry Gillam finished 6th and Katie 7th in their respective arenas.

Ashford Valley ODE               ...................................................................Report by Lynne Gillam

This was the last ODE of the season and only Harry Gillam represented the club at Level 2. The event was held at Chilham Castle and it is simply a stunning venue. Harry rode a good dressage test and was less than 1% off the lead. The showjumping course was very much up to height and this saw numerous riders gathering faults but luckily not Harry. The cross course was the highest and longest of the season on very undulating ground but the fences were well presented and challenging. Another clear round saw Harry win her section, her first at Level 2 and a good note on which to end the season.

The only other competitor was Gemma Allen at Level 3. A good dressage test followed by 4 faults on the last fence in the showjuming phase but clear cross country saw her clinch 4th overall in her arena.

It is simply a wonderful venue. Used by British Eventing there is much there to challenge riders of all abilities but you need to be able to jump 85cms to make use of the facilities on offer.

Romney Marsh ODE  -  8th August 2010  ..............................................Report by Lynne Gillam

Due to camp starting the day Old Surrey & Burstow only sent one team at level 2 to represent the club, the team consisted of Jamie Sterritt, George and Elizabeth Matthews and Harry Gillam. All rode positively in the dressage phase and managed clear rounds in the show jumping phase. The cross country saw three of the team go clear with Harry Gillam experiencing an ‘off day’. Jamie finished second his arena and Elizabeth seventh in hers, with the team managing to secure second overall. A special mention goes to Elizabeth who achieved an individual and team rosette and was over the moon complimented with a huge smile, well done Elizabeth.

Old Surrey & Burstow ODE - Friday 6th August 2010   .....................Report by Lynne Gillam

A ODE for the mini’s, consisting of Dinky Dinky, Dinky, Level 1 and Level 2 was held at Carewell during the summer holiday.

Class 1 – Dinky Dinky

In this class riders could be led or assisted and seven riders took the opportunity to compete. The dressage phase saw some very accurate riding with all scoring less than 27%. In the show jumping, all rode steady rounds with only one pole falling. The cross country was a little more challenging but still four of the seven rode clear rounds.

The results were:

  • 1st Rosie Underhill

  • 2nd Elise Bloquet

  • 3rd Ben Stone

  • 4th Jack Siggs

  • 5th James Penston

  • 6th Katie Rennie

  • 7th Archie Reid

Class 2 - Dinky

Five riders took part in this class, once again the dressage was a closely contested with a mere 5% separating the riders. The show jumping once again only saw one pole fall, so the cross country phase was to prove crucial. All riders found the course challenging but it was met with some determined riding.

The results were:

  • 1st Lucy Martin

  • 2nd Lauren Workman

  • 3rd Holly Austin

  • 4th Emma Ward

  • 5th Zara Staples

Class 3 – Level 1

Nine riders presented themselves for this class, once again the dressage was keenly contested with a mere 0.4% separating the top two. The showjumping saw the majority going clear but it was the cross country where the final placings were determined. This class rode a much longer course and the ditch proved to be an influential fence.

The results were:

  • 1st Toni Davis

  • 2nd Masie Hodge

  • 3rd Scarlett Rutter

  • 4th Morgann Bloquet

Class 4 – Level 2

By far the largest class of the day with 15 entries, the dressage phase saw some very impressive riding with four of the riders scoring over 80%. Very few poles rolled in the show jumping phase, so once again the cross country phase was going to be influential in determining the outcome. Only five managed to go clear and saw a change in the overall results.

The results were:

  • 1st Jamie Sterritt

  • 2nd Alex Stone

  • 3rd Kelly Bowring

  • 4th Chloe Wood

  • 5th George Matthews

  • 6th Harry Gillam

Pairs competition

The names were drawn out of a hat (a Sainsbury’s carry bag actually) which saw some interesting combinations put together. The aim was to encourage riders of different ages and abilities to support each other and improve friendships with the club.

The results were:

  • 1st Ben Stone & Jamie Sterritt

  • 2nd Elise Bloquet & Kelly Bowring

  • 3rd Masie Hodge & Nicole Patterson-Vanegas

  • 4th Rosie Underhill & Bryony McPake

  • 5th Toni Davis & Katie Brookes

  • 6th Scarlett Rutter & Harry Gillam

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following:

The numerous cross country fence judges, too many to mention individually but you know who you are.

  • Anita Reid for running the show jumping arena all day

  • Sue Barrow for tack check and ensuring the dressage arena ran to time

  • Mary-Ann Arscott who calculated the dressage scores and generally ran the marquee single handily.

  • Sue King for helping set up the day before the event

  • Mrs Allday for answering numerous questions and providing much of the equipment.

A special mention goes to Mark Ruddock for judging all of the dressage tests. He refused to accept any form of payment or gift. This he said is “him giving back to the Pony Club” and meant that far more now goes into club funds.

Finally, Wayne and Harry Gillam. They both spent the whole of the previous day at Carewell setting up the event, undertook numerous jobs and roles on the day and then helped pack away.

Without all of the above the event would not have been possible and I cannot put in to words how honoured I am that so many people supported this event. Thank you.

Garth South ODE – Saturday 31st July 2010          ..........................Report by Lynne Gillam

A team was sent to represent the club in class 1. Holly Austin, attending her first ODE, Morgann Bloquet riding her new pony at a ODE for the first time and Lucy Martin only riding in the team for the second time. The dressage stage saw all riding beautiful tests, a special mention to Holly who over came her nerves and should be very proud of herself and the test she rode. In the sj both Lucy and Holly went clear with Morgann having two unlucky poles down. In the xc phase, Morgann went clear and unfortunately Lucy and Holly each had a stop at the same fence.

Overall, Morgann achieved 7th and the team came second! Well done to the whole team, you were a credit to the club but especially yourselves and it was a pleasure watching you.

In the slightly higher class, we had two representatives, Morgann but this time on Buzz and Natalie on Charlie, attending only her second ODE. Once again the dressage tests were ridden with precision with many encouraging comments on both test sheets. The sj proved slightly more challenging and was up to height (70 cms) and both were eliminated. However, Garth South is such a lovely, encouraging club that they were both allowed to complete the xc phase. This phase was also up to height with a wide range of obstacles and both successfully completed the course. Although neither was placed overall, they were also a credit to themselves and super ambassadors for the club.

The final class was open to anyone and it was a strange sight watching adults riding a pony club dressage test! The only rider in this class was Harry Gillam on her beloved Asher, the dressage was very competitive with the top ten being within 6% of each other. Harry then managed a double clear and achieved 3rd overall, the highest placed ‘small person.’

A lovely venue to attend and we all agreed that it is definitely worth visiting.

Southdown East ODE - Wivelsden Farm                      .............  report by Sandra Brookes

(photos by Topsy Rudd - More on new Photo Gallery)

2 mini teams were entered for last Sunday's ODE at Wivelsden Farm hosted by Southdown East.  The OS&B Pink consisted on Nicole Patterson-Vanegas, Katie Brookes, Chloe Wood and Elizabeth Matthews.  The OS&B Blue was George Matthews, James Miller, Jamie Sterritt and Harriet (Harry) Gillam an honoury boy for the day!  Katie and Harry both came 3rd overall in their dressage and everyone except Katie jumped double clears!  Unfortunately Leo had the last pole down on the sj phase. Everyone rode really well on the xc phase though and it was great to see all finishing without penalty - it is a challenging Level 2 course with some very "full up" and spooky jumps.

At the end of the day OS&B Blue came 3rd and OS&B Pink came 4th with individual placings as follows:

Class A
Katie Brookes/Leo - 5th (Dressage 3rd)
Jamie Sterritt/Daisy - 7th
George Matthews/Macey - 10th
Nicole Patterson-Vanegas/Philadelphia - 11th

Team B
Harriet Gillam/Asher - 2nd (Dressage 3rd)
Chloe Wood/Ryan - 7th (8th)
Elizabeth Matthews/Fizz - 8th (9th)
James Miller/Valiant - 10th (11th)

The ice-cream van finally made a very late appearance and we all enjoyed an ice-cream whilst waiting for the results - ask James Miller how to extract a "gob-stopper" from a plastic ice-cream cone!!!!!!!

Note:  Having just checked the SDE website it has been noticed that there was an administration error made by the judges and a member of another pony club's dressage score was mislaid.  This has now been rectified changing the placings - Blue team coming 4th and Pink team 5th.  Amended individual placings for Team B are shown in brackets above.

Wivelsden Farm  ODE   27th June 2010                                     ....  report by Tracey Dollemore

Two Mini Teams and 2 Novice riders set off to Wivelsden Farm, Nr Lewes on the hottest day of the year so far!

The O S & B Blue Team were Georgia Dollemore, Kelly Bowring, Alex Stone and Bryony McPake.

The Red Team were Harriet Gillam, Katie Brookes, Georgia Keenleyside and Katie Rennie.

The Novice riders were Ashleigh Dollemore and Rebecca Barrow (who took 2 horses).

The Novice girls started early in the day and all 3 horses did a respectable dressage test Ashleigh coming 3rd in the dressage arena.  The Show Jumping phase caught all riders out with a pole each, whilst they all went a superb clear on the demanding cross country phase.  Ashleigh and Rebecca won their respective arenas and Rebecca came 2nd with her other ride.  If they were allowed to be a team (with just 2 riders and 3 horses) they would have also won the competition as a team!  Well done girls an amazing result just ahead of Area and against adults as well as this was an open competition.

The Mini were equally as successful with Georgia doing a great test and earning a 16.5  gaining her a 3rd in the dressage and Kelly fast on her keels with a fantastic 12.5 winning her arena.  Harriet Gillam also put in a fantastic dressage test coming 2nd in her arena.  The prizes came thick and fast for our minis today, I just hope I haven’t forgotten anyone (I couldn’t keep up with the presentation results).

Overall Results

  • 2nd Georgia Dollemore

  • 2nd Katie Rennie

  • 3rd Alex Stone

  • 4th Katie Brookes

  • 4th Georgia Keenleyside

  • 5th Kelly Bowring

  • 6th Bryony McPake

Dressage Results

  • 1st in dressage Kelly Bowring

  • 2nd in dressage Harriet Gillam

  • 3rd in dressage Georgia Dollemore

The blue team WON the team competition whilst the red team came 3rd.   A hot but very successful day out!  Well done to everyone!

Sunday 20th June 2010

Petersfield PC ODE at Coombelands                       ............................Report by Lynne Gillam

This is always a popular event and within two days of entries being received all the classes were over-subscribed! Petersfield PC decided to limit the numbers on the day to 150 in total. With 30 riders at level 2 and 60 riders in level 3 and 4, this meant that many riders were left disappointed.

OS&B had eleven riders entered for level 2 but only 4 places were allocated, so I took the decision to pick the names out of a hat (read Sainsbury’s plastic bag) and the four selected were; Bryony McPake, Katie Renee, Chloe Wood and Kelly Bowing. At this point I wish to make it clear my own child wasn’t even attending this event so it made my job much easier but not the telephone calls to those who didn’t make it.

On the day itself, the class was split into two arenas and our team had two combinations in each. The dressage went well and all remembered their tests. Katie Renee riding Sammy won her arena on 26% and Kelly riding her mum’s horse achieved a score of 28%, also winning her arena.

The next phase was the sj and all went clear with the exception of Chloe who rolled a pole.

In the XC all the team went clear!

Overall, the results were:

  • Katie and Kelly both won their respective arenas

  • Bryony achieved a 7th overall in her arena

  • The team WON overall!

Superb result for the club and individually. Well done to all those involved.

Romney Marsh ODE                                           ..................................Report by Lynne Gillam

Two members attended the Romney Marsh ODE at Barons Grange just outside Rye. A lovely setting with flat dressage and jumping arenas complimented by a xc course with a variety of features.

Morgann Bloquet continues to develop a strong partnership with Buzz, they rode a steady dressage test where they finished in 7th place. However, due to a number of fillers in the sj and a ditch in the xc, other competitors appeared to have a number of issues but not Morgann and Buzz! They jumped a double clear and propelled themselves up the leader board to finish the day 2nd overall.

Harry Gillam completed at level 1+, a pleasing dressage test followed by a double clear at sj and xc, enabled her to maintain her position and she also finished 2nd overall.

13th June 2010 – Chiddingfold ODE, Rogate.    .........................................Report Lynne Gillam

We've always put off visiting this venue due to the distance involved, 28 miles from Portsmouth with the satnav stating 1hour and 20 mins! The decision to take the easier option and stay closer to home has always been the most obvious one, but not this year, so off we set, 6am all in the lorry and pulling out of the yard.

The venue is near Portsmouth but we did the journey in 1hour 10 mins and it was worth it!

At the end of the long drive is a beautiful house (Fair Oak Estate) and we parked on the land in front of the house but couldn’t see the dressage arenas or sj. We were informed that they were all behind the hedge, ‘only’ five arenas had been set out, all flat with topped grass. The sj was next door, flat land again with enough room to build a decent course with a variety of jumps.

The main feature is the course country course, it starts opposite the parking in front of the house, and goes around the side of the house, right to the very back and round again. The most has been made of the undulating ground and natural features, plus very well maintained and planned jumps made the trip very worth while indeed. The take-off and landings areas had all been prepared in advance and the variety of jumps (not all being used) were extremely impressive.

As the only member to attend, Harry was placed first and second in her arena after the dressage and went clear on both in the sj. Asher went clear xc and Harry came back beaming, to quote her, ‘That was brilliant.’ The only negative part of the day was Harry taking the decision to withdraw Boy from the XC phase prior to starting.

Overall, Harry won her arena along with the best dressage score.

East Sussex 6th June 2010                                           .............................Report by Lynne Gillam

At level 1 the club were represented by Morgann Bloquet, Georgia and Harriet Keenleyside and Harriet Gillam. Once again, all rode very impressive dressage tests, with Harriet G achieving the best score in her two arenas. Morgann, Georgia and Harriet G all jumped double clears, and all rode with style and grace. The two Harriet’s experienced a few tricky moments on the xc with Harriet K successfully completing the course and Harriet deciding to retire. Overall, Harriet G won one arena, followed by Morgann in second place on Buzz who are starting to form a very positive partnership and look as if they could be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Georgia K finished 3rd individually with the team coming a very creditable 3rd overall.

At level 2 the team were represented by Alex Stone and Nicole Patterson-Vanegas, Alex under the expert eye of her father, achieved the best dressage score of in her arena and went on to jump clear in both the sj and xc, thus ensuring she led her arena from the start of the competition. Nicole rode a consistent dressage test, had a few issues sj and decided to retire during the xc phase.

Eridge 30th May 2010                                                   .......................Report by Lynne Gillam

At level 2 (12 and Under) OS&B were represented by Katie Renee, Elizabeth Matthews and James Miller, all successfully completed their dressage tests and jumped clear in the sj. Katie experienced a frustrating stop early in the xc but went onto successfully complete the remaining fences, Elizabeth rode with determination and achieved a very good round. James and the ever young Valiant, rode a perfect round with style and flair. Overall, James finished 9th in his arena and the team a very creditable fifth overall.

Level 2 mini individual.                                                 ..........................report by Jane Wood

Chloe Wood and George Matthews represented OS&B in this class. After the dressage
Chloe and George both had double clears in the show jumping and x-country, which was good as there were only 6 in the whole class. The final placings were Chloe 7th and George 9th. They also gave a special prize for the competitor with the best combined scores over the 2
ODE's held in May at Eridge and Chloe won that.

Crawley and Horsham Hunt PC ODE                               .......................report by Sam Bloquet

The Crawley and Horsham Hunt PC held a lovely ODE for the little riders at Stone Hall. The day was a merit to the pony club. The venue was just beautiful and the organisers were very pleasant and welcoming. Morgann Bloquet (7) and Sophie Preston (8) both attended and competed in the 10's and under class. The dressage went well for both the girls, Morgann ended up with the 2nd best dressage score of the class (her best result to date). Both girls achieved clear rounds in both the show jumping and the cross country, which was a real achievement as the latter was a respectable 1'6" and caused a number of problems for many of the competitors. Both girls ended up in the rosettes, Morgann came 2nd and Sophie came 3rd and were thoroughly pleased. Everyone had a great day out

Eridge ODE Sunday 23rd May 2010                                      .............. report by Lynne Gillam

On a very warm and sunny Sunday morning, OS&B mini-mini eventing attended their second ODE of the 2010 season.

Class 1

This year saw four riders entered, unled but assisted, 8 years and under. OS&B sent a team consisting of Sophie Preston, Lucy Martin and Morgann Blouquet, James Penston was also due to ride but was asked to attend Area Mounted Games instead.

All three girls rode the test from memory, even though it could have been called without any penalties being incurred, and all rode very accurate and pleasing tests, special mention to Sophie who was invaded by a huge swarm of wasps half way through her test, well done her (and pony) neither of whom flinched!

Sophie went clear in the sj, Lucy had an unfortunate run out and Morgann decided to jump an extra fence, so was technically eliminated. However, Eridge were kind enough to let Morgann continue her round of sj and still allowed her to gain valuable experience xc.

The xc saw some very nifty running by Jean supporting Sophie who went clear, Morgann went clear after her disappointment in the sj and Lucy had one stop.

Overall, Sophie finished 3rd and Lucy 7th.

A super result for all of them, their first ever ODE. Well done girls!

Classes 2 and 3

OS&B didn’t have anyone entered into these respective classes.

Class 4

The team consisted of Emma Thornett, Hannah Martin and Harry Gillam, Maisie Hodge was due to attend but Beauty is still on the road to recovery so unfortunately had to withdraw. Harry Gillam also competed as an individual due to a rider not being allowed to enter and ride two combinations in the same team. As Eridge is one of the more popular ODE’s  with 60 riders entered, competing in two arenas, it was going to be a long day!

All three had the dressage tests called, and although without penalty, the younger team certainly showed who the brighter members of OS&B are! Once again, good results were achieved and the team moved onto the sj. Hannah and Harry both went clear, with Emma following the example set by Morgann earlier in the day and jumping the wrong course, once again, this resulted in a technical elimination. She also was allowed to go xc but only at the discretion of Eridge, a special mention to Mrs S Groom of Eridge for being so accommodating.

In xc, all combinations went clear and finished on a positive note all round.

Hannah finished the day on her dressage score, a super achievement for her first ODE, Harry also completed on her dressage scores and finished 7th on Asher and 2nd on Boy respectively.

Bisley ODE

Level 1                                                                                     ................report by Lynne Gillam

OS&B was represented by Georgia and Harriet Keenleyside, Masie Hodge, Emma Thornett and Harriet Gillam, Morgann Bloquet was due to ride but an injury to her pony prevented her from competing but she still turned up to cheer the riders on.

The day started with dressage, all successfully completed their tests, a special mention to Masie who rode Sean instead of Beauty as she is also currently out of action. Attending her first ODE she managed to come equal first in her arena, a super result.

The show jumping came next and all rode consistent and steady rounds over a variety of jumps and combinations.

The final phase was the cross country, clear rounds were achieved by Georgia, Emma and Harriet G. Harriet K had two stops but rode with determination and came off the course with the biggest smile we’ve ever seen!

The results were:

Georgia Keenleyside, 2nd overall.

Emma Thornett, 8th overall.

Harriet Gillam, 1st overall.

Masie Hodge, unfortunately not placed overall

This meant the team finished 2nd.

Riding as individuals

Harriet G, 7th overall

Harriet K, unfortunately not placed overall.

With the exception of Emma T and Harriet G, all were attending their first ODE and were a credit to themselves and OS&B.

Level 2

The team consisted of Alex Stone, Katie Renee, Bryony McPake and Natalie Arscott. Katie was attending her first level 2 and Bryony and Natalie had never attended such an event before. They also started with the dressage and all rode very accurate and precise tests, Natalie finishing a very creditable third in her arena.

Charlie, ridden by Natalie, decided one of the jumps in the show jumping was not to his liking and was eliminated, but she rode positively and took the disappointment in her stride. Bryony had an unlucky pole down but Alex and Katie went clear.

In the cross country phase Sammy, ridden by Katie, decided that the water feature (minus canoe this year!) was too spooky and not to his liking so they progressed no further. Katie was extremely disappointed but for a new combination once they are together, their luck will soon turn. Alex rode with style and up until the half way point appeared to be on for a clear round but taking a corner a little too sharply resulted in a stop. Once she’d gathered herself she rode the rest of the course without any further issues, and OS&B have another member who should turn in some very good results as the season progresses. Due to the number of issues faced by other riders, Alex still manages to finish 8th overall. Finally Bryony and the infamous Gilly, riding with determination she managed a clear round, out of 64 riders less than 20 went clear! This resulted in Bryony achieving 5th overall in her arena.
