Dressage Phase

Please read in conjunction with page on general information

Commanders

For level 2 the test must be ridden from memory.

For level 1 only, the test may be called (commanded)

Entering the Arena

Competitors must not enter the arena until the judge has sounded the bell / horn.

Entering before the bell / horn may lead to elimination

Salute

A rider must take the reins and whip, if carried, in one hand and drop the other down by their side and bow their head only.

Fall of horse or rider

The competitor will not be eliminated but will be penalised.

Resistance

Any horse failing to enter the arena within 60 seconds of the bell / horn will be eliminated.

A horse refusing to continue a test (after starting) for a period of 20 consecutive seconds will be eliminated.

Assistance

The voice – The use of the voice is prohibited and will result in the loss of two marks from the movement(s) concerned.

Outside – Except for a commander in level 1, by voice, signals etc, is considered assistance, and the rider will be eliminated.

The arena

The test begins when the horse enters at ‘A’ and finishes with the final halt. Competitors should leave at ‘A’ in free walk on a long rein.

Errors of course or test

When a competitor makes ‘an error of course’ the judge will sound the bell / horn. The error will be explained by the judge, the rider directed back to where they went wrong and the test recommenced.

Penalties for errors of course or test

First error        2 marks

Second error    4 marks

Third error       8 marks

The points deducted are cumulative; after three errors of course 14 marks are deducted.

For each movement on the test a mark is awarded the description of each is:

Scoring

The judge’s marks are added to together, penalties deducted to give an overall total.

The final mark is calculated as a percentage of the overall marks available.

For example, if a rider achieved 70.9% for the test, the penalties carried forward to the next phase is 29.1.
