Cross Country Phase
Please note – will now
be referred to as XC.
Inspection
of the course
Must be completed and
ready by 2pm the day preceding and can only be inspected on
foot.
Modification of the course
No modification or
alteration can occur after the course has been opened for
inspection, except in exceptional circumstances. This may
involve the severity of the obstacle being reduced or to by-pass
such obstacles. Each competitor will be personally informed of
the proposed alteration before they start and an official may be
posted at the place where the alteration has been made.
Boundary
flags
Red and white boundary
flags are used to mark the start, end and compulsory elements of
the course. A competitor must leave the red flag on their right
and the white flag on their left.
Direction
markers
These are yellow or
orange and are placed so as to mark the route and to help the
rider in keeping to the course. They may be passed on either
side and keeping close to them is not necessary.
‘L’ fences
Used to denote an
easier alternative to the main obstacle. Each will be marked
with red and white boundary flags and a marker with a red ‘L’ on
a white background beneath the fence number.
Jumping an ‘L’ fence
will incur 15 penalties.
Starting
A competitor may only
start when given the signal to do so by the starter. The starter
will count down from five before giving the signal to start and
the competitor may move around the start enclosure as he pleases
but not crossing the start line as they do so.
Starting early or
catering through the start line may incur elimination at the
discretion of the Official Steward. If a horse fails to start
within 60 seconds of the signal being given, the competitor is
eliminated.
Assistance within the
starting enclosure is permitted, provided it ceases immediately
the signal is given to start. From that instant, the competitor
is considered to have started and to be on the course.
Speed
At levels 1 and 2 an
Optimum time of 435mpm will be used. The minimum time is
calculated as 15 seconds less than the Optimum time. No time
penalties will be given for going too slowly; however, if the
competitor completes the course in less than the minimum time,
0.4 penalty point for every second less than the minimum time
will be added.
