Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award

Congratulations to Rebekka Barrow and Claudia Thornett riding Gracie and Gadwall, who completed four days and three nights on the South Downs and passed their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award Expedition, this is the first time that it has been done on horse back they covered up to 30 km per day! The girls were part of a group of seven ages 16 to 18. The examiner made these comments “the girls were members of a team of 14 (14 because I must recognise the contribution to their success by their horses) who undertook a challenging expedition in the South Downs National Park. An expedition on horse back is no easy option, with several hours each day devoted to caring for the horses, in addition to the usual camp craft and journeying. The organisation the team showed was superb. Undertaking a journey each day was not an option they considered and included stops at ancient churches on route. They were always in good spirits when ever I met them even during the day of fog and rain, Rebekka’s patience and map reading skills were appreciated by the team, well done” Bob Rhodes 24/08/11

To Jamie Sterritt and Daisy for coming eighth in the British Riding Clubs' Junior Dressage Final at the Royal Windsor Horse Show on 11 May.

Congratulations to Frankie Penfold, an Old Surrey Member who has enjoyed a successful winter pony racing culminating with winning the South East hunts pony racing final at Plumpton on Sunday.

"This is my 3rd season pony racing, I started with Pony club race days on a hairy 12.2 hh pony called Jasmin and then went onto a 13.2 hh chestnut mare, Red Cedar who I raced 17 times and gained a lot of experience on, then I was lucky enough to be offered a ride by Mark and Keeley Harrison on their 13.2 hh, Push the Button who I competed in the Charles Owen series and was 3rd at the Cheltenham final last year. This season my rides are Mr. Moneyman who I won on at Plumpton South East final and Beside the Sea who I won two races on at Godstone.

My aim is to race again at the Aintree final and improve on 3rd position of last year."
